Fibromyalgia: My Healing Journey

Updated: Nov 11

(Jump straight to my podcast interview here!)

About 12 years ago, my life came to a sudden standstill.

I began experiencing pain in my shoulders, back, hips - honestly, it felt like my entire body was under siege. The nights were the worst. I’d lie in bed, feeling sharp stabbing pains like daggers in my shoulder blades and pelvis, making sleep nearly impossible.

After months of bouncing between medical specialists and tests, I finally received a diagnosis: fibromyalgia.

At first, I was relieved. I thought, “Great, now I can get on the right meds, manage the pain, and get my life back.” But over time, I realised that relying on medication alone wasn’t the answer for me. If I truly wanted to reclaim my health, I needed to take matters into my own hands.

That’s when my journey really began.

I explored every holistic healing method I could find: infra-red light therapy, saunas, acupuncture, colonics, prolonged fasting, juice cleanses, raw plant-based nutrition, cold water therapy, massage, Reiki - the list goes on. I spent months researching, experimenting, and throwing myself into every alternative treatment that offered even a glimmer of hope.

There were times I would attempt to come off the meds (I was on amitriptyline), but the pain would always creep back. Despite this, I refused to give in. I stayed committed to my journey. I stuck to a 100% raw food diet for a full two years, giving my body the rest, love, and respect it had long been denied.

You see, it took years of neglecting my body’s true needs to reach the point of illness. So, I knew it wasn’t going to be an overnight fix.

Through patience, persistence, and self-compassion, I focused on healing from deep within - on a cellular level. It wasn’t easy, and the road was long, but slowly, I began to see results.

Looking back I am sure that perimenopause was playing a part in this too. I was suffering from chronic inflammation, for whatever reason, and so giving my body space and time to heal was imperative.
